objectivism

I have a friend from High School days that gave me the book "The Virtue of Selfishness" to read. He has always been an atheist and seemed to have really bought into this philosophy.

I have to say the author, Ayn Rand, seems to have read the Bible but I don't know if she read the same Bible I read. She just doesn't get it and talks as if she does. It infuriates me. I want to argue points with my friend but I know that is not the answer.

I wish he could read Rand's stuff and the Bible with the eyes I do. I wish for him the Life I know.

If you start with the premise that there is no creator, no god, then it is very difficult to find "reason" in life let alone a definition of "reason". Her stuff unravels faster than she can weave it.

However...
Perspective is reality...

If you haven't read any of Rand's work before, I suggest starting with one of her novels. Anthem, We The Living or Fountainhead. I would save Atlas Shrugged for last of her novels, although it is the most comprehensive of her philosophy.

By the way, I am not trying to knock your belief in God, but what is your defintion of reason? How does her stuff unravel? The reason I ask is because if your friend is sharing with you his philosophy, why don't you show him how her philosophy unravels? It would be an interesting conversation, I am sure.

Perspective is reality: that is an interesting statement. So if someone is drunken and have double vision, and looks at you and sees two people, does that mean in reality 2 people really exist before him?

Not trying to give offense...just curious.

hey, that comment deleted was me. I posted something, but it didn't come out the way I'd meant it to, and then I just can't really explain well right now, I've only had one cup of coffee. Maybe I'll be able to type it up better later. But, in the mean time, I'd like to hear your side murph. What do you think? Why is it that her views "unravel faster than she can weave them"?

Hey Murph, this is Brendon's wife. I just wanted to tell you that I can't stand Ayn Rand and her philosophy. She is my absolute least favorite philosopher! I've never been able to read her work without becoming angry (and it is not easy to make me angry). I can't even begin to comprehend what kind of life she must've had that could lead her to the conclusions she came to. It makes me sad that there are people who actually feel the way she does.

Perspective does not change truth.
If your vision is impaired and causes you to see double, that doesn't mean that in reality there is two of everything. Reality is your vision is impaired causing you to see two everything.

Sometimes we make it harder than it is.

Hi, Murph, I don't know you, but I met some friends of yours through blogging (they commented on a friend's site, etc... you know how these things work).

Unfortunately, she won't see the truth of the Bible until she's a Christian. As Christians, we are given the gift of understanding the Bible. We see it with new eyes, and can comprehend the lessons in it. I have not yet met a person who is not a Christian who could grasp it. It's just another of God's glorious gifts to us.

I haven't heard of Ayn Rand, but all I can do is pray for her. She sounds very hurt and very lonely and VERY misguided.
